Methodology, Caveats, Sources

This calculator is a statistical estimate, not a census count of available partners. It combines official demographic datasets with a transparent independence model so each filter can be inspected and challenged.

UK population
69,281,437
Adults aged 18+
55,022,253
Adult sex split
48.4% men / 51.6% women

How The Result Is Calculated

The headline uses the selected target pool as the denominator. If the user is looking for men, the percentage is out of UK adult men aged 18+. If they are looking for women, it is out of UK adult women aged 18+. If they choose any gender, it is out of all UK adults aged 18+.

The cascade multiplies the target-gender base by age, height, body type, income, education, ethnicity, orientation, availability, children, marriage history, and baldness filters. The app also shows the all-adult percentage underneath the headline when the target denominator is only men or only women.

estimated matches = UK adults aged 18+ x target gender share x each selected filter probability

Age and population base

UK adult population, target-gender denominator, and exact single-year age shares.

Note
Values are shares of UK adults aged 18+; 90+ is grouped by ONS.

Ethnicity

Preferred ethnic-group filter.

Geography

Period
Census 2021

Note
Approximate UK-wide adjustment from England & Wales census categories. Replace with harmonised UK census data before final release.

Height

Target height range using sex and age-band mean heights with a normal-distribution model.

Geography
England
Period
HSE 2024
Source
NHS Health Survey for England 2024, Adult and child overweight and obesity Table 1
Note
Means are age-band specific. Standard deviations are retained from the previous anthropometric model because HSE Table 1 publishes means and standard errors, not full height distributions.

Income, male

Minimum annual income filter for male targets.

Geography

Period
HMRC SPI 2023/24 + ONS mid-2024 adult population
Source
HMRC Personal Income Statistics Table 3.3, total income before tax by sex
Note
Converted from rounded taxpayer counts into an all-adult approximation by assigning non-taxpayers to the under-20k bracket. The 70k-100k and 200k-300k HMRC bands are split linearly to fit app thresholds.

Income, female

Minimum annual income filter for female targets.

Geography

Period

Education

Minimum education filter.

Note
Corrected: original app overstated degree+ at 41%. Census 2021 Level 4+ ≈ 33.8%. Undergrad/postgrad split approximated from APS higher-degree share (~11%).

Body type, male

Preferred BMI category filter for male targets.

Single or available

Must be single / not living with partner filter.

Geography

Period

Source
ONS Population estimates by marital status and living arrangements, Tables 5 and 6
Note
Uses 'not living in a couple' by age and sex as the best available official proxy for dating availability. This is not the same as legal marital status or self-reported willingness to date.

Sexual orientation

Compatibility adjustment for heterosexual, gay/lesbian, and bisexual selections.

Geography
UK
Period
2024
Source
ONS Sexual orientation, UK 2024
Note
ONS estimates 93.4% heterosexual or straight, 2.1% gay or lesbian, and 1.6% bisexual. Residual responses are mapped to the existing app buckets.

Known Caveats

The largest limitation is correlation. Income, age, education, region, ethnicity, and relationship status are not independent in real life. The calculator currently multiplies each filter independently because official public tables rarely provide the full joint distribution needed for a dating-market model.

  • Geography mismatch remains for education/marriage/body-type: several inputs are England & Wales or England datasets applied to a UK adult pool.
  • Adult population and age shares now use ONS mid-2024 single-year age estimates; update when the next ONS release lands.
  • Income is an all-adult approximation from HMRC taxpayer counts plus ONS adult population; it is not a joint income-by-age dating-market model.
  • Filters are multiplied as independent; real correlations (income×education×age) make niche 'high' criteria underestimates.
  • Availability uses ONS 'not living in a couple' as a proxy. It is not the same as self-reported willingness to date.
  • Height uses official age-band means, but still models the spread with retained standard deviations because the public HSE table does not publish full height-percentile distributions.
  • The availability filter means not living in a couple. It does not prove someone is dating, compatible, reachable, or interested.
